Introduction to Energy Storage System (ESS):

Energy storage becomes relevant to optimize generation and consumption of energy at different point of time and also ensure uninterrupted & quality power supply. ESS is an application, wherein Energy generated at one time is used at another time.

While, energy storage comes with different technologies, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is one technology that has been developed to store electric charge by using specially developed batteries. BESS has advantage over other storage technologies as it has small footprint, no restriction on geographical locations and ease of mobility.

BESS by utilizing Lithium Ion technology offer high energy and power densities that are suitable for utilizing at distribution transformer level.

BESS components are grouped according to function into battery components, components required for reliable system operation and grid connection components.

Battery Management System (BMS):

The battery management system consists of the Battery Pack, which connects multiple cells to appropriate voltage and capacity. BMS protects cells from harmful operation, in terms of voltage, temperature and current, to achieve reliable and safe operations by balancing varying cell states-of-charge (SOCs) within a serial connection.

Power Conversion System (PCS):

Power Electronics can be grouped into conversion unit, which converts power flow between the grid and battery and the required control and monitoring components.

Energy Management System (EMS):

The EMS is responsible for system power flow control, management and distribution. System thermal management controls all functions related to heating, ventilation and air-conditioning of the containment system. EMS will mainly be required at large scale, Grid Support ESS with multi megawatt systems with multiple megawatt systems with multiple usages. In smaller systems, this could be part of PCS.

Applications of ESS:

ESS applications ranges from grid operators & utilities [reducing costs “Behind-The-Meter (BTM)”] to end users. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) have seen widest range of uses, while others are used in specific applications.
